As Malaysia turns 50 this year, let us take time to assess how close we are to our goal of becoming a developed nation. More importantly, let us consider how we, the Church, have contributed towards this goal.
Here, I am reminded of Jesus' charge that we are to be "salt of the earth and light of the world."(Matthew 5:13,14). Salt, as we know, is both a preservative (against decay and corruption) and a "task-enhancer" (gives flavour to food). So, the presence of Christians should help to stop the moral decay in society, and at the same time, improve the quality of life in their communities.
As light of the world, Christians are to help dispel the darkness caused by corruption, injustice and all other forms of evil that mark the good name of the nation.
Let us heed His command to let our light shine before men so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). By doing so, we will silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.(1 Peter 2:15)
