“Pillar” or “Pillow” people?

There are absolutely no qualms to what YOU, yes! A young person like you can contribute, serve and influence your church, community and the regions beyond.

You may be wondering, what does the first paragraph have to do with pillars and pillows?

The church is not confined to the four walls that enclose all of you. It is YOU! You are the church. Your life, your whole self is God’s residing place where He dwells in through Christ’s costly sacrifice that made it possible.(Eph 2:21-22), (1 Corinthians 6:19).

So what can we do as believers who congregate week in week out on a Sunday or a Saturday during service and to some of us who are serving in a ministry or two? Romans 16, Paul writes to the Roman church first to commend on a few champions of the faith namely Phoebe, Priscilla and Aquilla who have risked their lives by sending his letters to the Roman church. This history traces back to the days of Nero where church persecution was prevalent and ongoing back then. Secondly, he warns the church to “watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in [any believer’s, own emphasis] way that are contrary to the teaching [the believers, own emphasis] have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord, Christ, but their own appetites….”

The enemy does not just attack the church or God’s people from without but within as well! What kind of person are you today in your church? Are you a pillar to your church or a “pillow”?

Let me list down to you some of the characteristics of a pillow person:

1. - All fluffed up. Everything goes.

2. - Spiritually sleepy

3. - Low resistance level

4. Comfortable and immovable. Complacent with their own confines and are not willing to extend themselves to others.

Pillar person:

1.

-G Grounded but not immovable

2. - Servant-hearted

3. - Consistent, reliable and humble

Dear all, whether you are serving in the capacity as a worship leader, frontliner, or even a steward (usher), you can be a pillar and not a pillow to His house and eventually to your circle of influence. Pillar people serve sacrificially. They serve with an attitude of abandonment to self and they live and serve for His glory and not their own renown. Are you willing to be the hands and feet of Jesus, regardless of what the cost? Are you willing to “die” to man’s applause and seek to please Him more than anything else? Do we have “Paul-s” and “Esther-s” in our midst that have a heart to serve his or her generation in accordance to His plans and will even if it is requires sacrifice.

Just recently, two Chinese girls from China have not been to church or even experience church in their entire life came to the church where I currently attend right now, ELIM Pentecostal, and decided to join the service from there on. Why? They reasoned to us that someone in Uni from our church was kind to them.

You see how such simplicity of living- when we live our lives for His cause and be the church to the broken world out there, that we are able to point them a step closer to our loving God. So let me encourage you to continue to live your lives as pillars for God, able to withstand pressures and forces of all sorts, in your work, ministry, and schools and beyond.

Believe in you most indefinitely.

Submission precedes direction

Every direction that we take leads to a destination. This principle is well learnt even in our Geography texts! Bearings, degrees of deviation, right or left turns...

This principle applies to our lives! Whatever direction that we take on, be it our study life, our relationship with our parents, our ministry and our personal walk with Him. For instance, if we choose to adopt the path of being diligent in our work, being attentive in class, getting the subject right before we're all well on to the exam hall, we know that we're not going to be disappointed once we step out of the exam hall because this path assures us that we've done everything that we can.

Question. How do we know which path to set foot on? How do we know if we're lost? I guess the explanation of "we'll never know whether we're lost until we reach nowhere" comes into the picture.

So what's next? you may ask.

Proverbs 7:6, King Solomon, one of the wisest man ever lived in his generation after King David writes a very insightful story. Here he says "at the window of my house, I looked out through the lattice. I saw among the simple,.. a young men, a youth lacked judgment " now we may want to pause and give a deeper thought to that line " youth lacked judgment".

When young people are referred to as someone who lacks judgment, it literally means we don't live long enough to experience life. Which is true till this day! There's nothing to be ego-deflated about.

As " he was walking down the street near her corner to her house, ... then came a woman to meet him dressed like a prostitute... She took hold of him and kissed him... " I have fellowship offerings at home today I fulfilled my vows" says the woman.

Here we don't even have to be a graduate bible scholar to know that this young person's heading for trouble. And what can we understand from the statement where the woman said " I have fellowship offerings..." she's basically saying that I have done my part in confessing my sins and I'm ready to commit it all over again. Dressed like a prostitute, committing adultery(vv 19 my husband is not at home), do the math, the young man must have been thinking, "wow, I'm wanted, i'm desirable..."

Solomon knew that he was heading into trouble as the scripture ends " all at once he followed her like an ox going to a slaughter... little knowing it will cost him his life" I hope you're not lost up till this point. Solomon's painting a picture illustrating that we just don't know where we're heading sometimes due to our inexperience.

“For the law was given to Moses, but Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” John 1:17. Grace. God’s precious gift, His one and only, His favoured one, our righteousness, our forgiver, our counselor, our comforter and close friend-Jesus.
Before his humble arrival, it was the law that God pierced onto the tablets to reflect man’s fallen nature.

Spelling every sinful nature that man is prone to, inclined towards and tempted into, only the high priest of the highest order could perform the atonement of man’s ugliness. His glory, splendour and love were hindered by our scars.

His heart aches. Every beat pounds for reconciliation, restoration and return. And it was then, “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Through him, the sick were healed; the blind was bestowed back with sight, the broken and hurting received comfort, emptiness was made whole again. Yet “the world did not recognize him… and his own did not receive him.”

Grace never lets up. Unconditional, unfailing love drove him to the ghastly crucifix, Golgotha. His crimson flow poured out as the nails of judgment drove deep into Grace’s guiltless hands and feet. “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Grace pleads.
Who is Grace? He is Jesus. God’s begotten son. In him, the remission of sins is possible. In him, we find reconciliation with the Father. Accepting him results in tremendous revolution. Liken a wild beast chained for his sinister and evil desires, Grace resides and breaks those chains. “Christ in me, the hope of glory.”

Condemnation now falls away, never again to besiege man. A new path created. Now man has a choice. A choice to fall into the arms of Grace, or crippled by fear and damnation. Grace is always welcoming, accepting, loving, caring, pardoning and enfolding.

Treading on life’s hazy roads, falters, fumbles and follies of the past may creep in. But “His Grace is more than enough, Grace’s (his) strength is shown in our weakness.” "His word saves our lives". Therefore, let us abandon our old wretched ways and run after Grace. The fountain of living waters and life.


Choose Grace I pray. For it’s Grace that fulfils what the law requires. Understand and immerse yourself in him. For in him, we are a new creation, royalty, beautiful, pure and blameless . It is by Grace. Grace has a name and it is Jesus.
